Ekey falls in Ohio Amateur final

ASHLAND — Defending champion Emma Jandel used a big closing run to come from behind and win the 2007 Women’s Ohio Amateur championship Friday. Individual medalist Kathleen Ekey jumped to a 6-hole lead with 13 to play in the 36-hole final. Jandel squared it at 16 apiece, then birdied the first playoff hole at the Country Club of Ashland.

Sharon Township resident Ekey, who won the event in 2005, had a 6-up lead after 23 holes only to watch Jandel fight back. Jandel is the 10th player to win back-to-back championships. The last to do it was Diana Schwab, who won in 1989 and 1990.

Suzi Spotelson won the championship consolation flight. Rachel Levi won the first flight, Alexandra Brown won the second flight and Stacey Stutz won the third flight.
