Craig Komar named to replace Gunkelman as Heritage principal

MEDINA — Craig Komar, former associate principal at A.I. Root Middle School, will be principal of Heritage Elementary School starting this fall.
Komar, 31, is filling the shoes of Barbara Gunkelman, who was principal of Heritage for 12 years and retired at the end of the school year.
“Mrs. Gunkelman’s leadership, knowledge and personal skills have helped to make Heritage the successful school that it is today,” Komar said. “It’s really nice following someone who has been very positive and inspirational to the staff and students and very motivational. I think the mesh between what I bring and what Barb had is going to be very smooth.”
Komar said he looks forward to “working with the students, staff and parents to continue the tradition of excellence in the Medina City Schools.”
Prior to his previous year at A.I Root, Komar taught math at Claggett Middle School and second grade at Ella Canavan Elementary.
“It’s nice for me to be able to get back into an elementary building. It’s going to be exciting for me to be able to get into the classrooms and work collaboratively with teachers,” Komar said. “We are implementing a new block schedule (this year). So that’s a new adventure for us here.”
Komar has a master’s in education from the University of Akron and a bachelor’s in education from Ashland University.
Komar’s other involvements in the district include building continuous improvement planning committees and staff development and technology committees.
He was also assistant coach for the boys and girls eighth-grade track and field teams.
