MEDINA — A tie vote between two candidates in the race for a seat on Seville Village Council means conducting a hand recount next week to determine the winner.
Unofficial vote totals on election night showed James Lovejoy ahead of Leslie Miller by one vote — 290 to 289.
When the election was certified Wednesday, vote totals showed Miller and Lovejoy each with 291 votes after provisional ballots were counted, said Sue Strasser, director of the Medina County Board of Elections.
In order for an automatic recount to take place, the vote difference must be half a percent or less. The recount will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Board of Elections and four two-person teams hope to complete the count within two hours, she said.
They will first print out the results stored on a canister, which records the votes made on voting machines, and count the paper receipts, Strasser said.
If the vote is still tied after the recount, a coin toss will determine the winner.
Miller and Lovejoy ran for two open spots on village council along with S. Paul Hoskinson. Since Hoskinson received 323 votes, he has won one of the seats.
Miller said she is happy to be back in the race and had been waiting for two weeks to see what would happen.
“This makes me a firm believer of what will happen, will happen,†she said. “What will be, will be.â€
This race is the only one that will require a recount, Strasser said.
