This year, Medina Township resident Mary Ann Vithous, who won second place in Senior Living’s cover art contest amateur division, said she tried some new techniques. Like Evelyn Garver, who took top honors in the division, Vithous, 74, learned the basics by participating in Bob Ross technique classes, studying with Terry Anthony.
“But I tried to experiment with the brushes more this year, like trying a stencil brush for snow,†Vithous said. “I tried oils this year. Last year I tried a watercolor on canvas.â€
When she helped her husband in their business and raised her sons, art took a backseat for about 15 years. After her retirement, she rediscovered her love of painting and now enjoys time to work in oils, acrylics and watercolors.
Vithous, who also loves to craft handmade Christmas ornaments every year, said she enjoys trading tips with a fellow artist.
“You look at a painting in a mirror, step back and look at it, and you catch things you might not see otherwise,†Vithous said. “And if you put a piece of red plastic sheeting over your painting, it can show you where you need darker colors.â€
Her work also has received prizes at the Medina and Cuyahoga county fairs, including a Best of Show for a painting of birds on slate.
“I just enjoy it. I’m doing what I like to do.â€
