Day of decadence descends on city

MEDINA — Chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate cookies, chocolate milkshakes and chocolate ice cream are just a few of the sweet treats available to sample at Saturday’s For the Love of Chocolate Festival at the Community Center on the Medina County Fairgrounds.

The chocolate festival, sponsored by the Medina County chapter of the American Red Cross, raised about $40,000 last year and is the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Red Cross Executive Director Beth Kilchenman said.

Participants can choose to buy a $5 ticket, allowing them to have five samples, or $10 for 10 samples.

From noon to 4 p.m., local businesses and individuals will offer samples and other items for sale at booths throughout the Community Center. There also will be children’s games, like an Oreo cookie stacking contest, raffles, a silent auction and a bake sale.

“There are usually a lot of Valentine-oriented products for sale,” Kilchenman said.

Those offering samples include Dominic’s, Bakers Square, McJak Candy Co., Mootown Creamery and the Medina County Career Center.

A few changes were made this year to ease the crowding that happened at last year’s event, when more than 5,000 people packed the Community Center, Kilchenman said.

The decadent dessert and cookie contests, featuring creations by children and adults, will be conducted Friday evening at Buehler’s, 3626 Medina Road, Medina Township. The desserts will be available for sale Saturday, she said.
