GRANGER TWP. — Highland Local Schools will have a new superintendent at the helm starting Aug. 1.
The Highland Board of Education hired Catherine Aukerman, assistant superintendent of Berea City Schools, as the district’s next superintendent at a special meeting Monday night.
Aukerman, 42, succeeds Superintendent Bruce Armstrong, who announced his retirement after eight years as Highland’s superintendent.
Aukerman, of Hudson, was given a three-year contract and a salary of $120,000 per year, a district spokeswoman said.
“I’m looking forward to working with the community, students and staff at the Highland district,†Aukerman said Tuesday. “It’s a wonderful district to become a part of.â€
Aukerman has spent three years as the assistant superintendent in Berea.
Previously, she was the director of elementary education for Canton City Schools, a principal in Twinsburg City Schools and an elementary teacher for Cleveland City Schools.
Aukerman’s contract expires July 31, 2011.
School board President Norm Christopher has said Aukerman’s range of experience made her an excellent candidate for the position.
Aukerman was selected from a pool of 48 applicants.
On April 21, the public is invited to meet Aukerman at an informal reception following the regularly scheduled board of education meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Highland High School cafeteria.
