GRANGER TWP. â€” Highland Local Schools will have a new superintendent at the helm starting Aug. 1.
The Highland Board of Education hired Catherine Aukerman, assistant superintendent of Berea City Schools, as the districtâ€™s next superintendent at a special meeting Monday night.
Aukerman, 42, succeeds Superintendent Bruce Armstrong, who announced his retirement after eight years as Highlandâ€™s superintendent.
Aukerman, of Hudson, was given a three-year contract and a salary of $120,000 per year, a district spokeswoman said.
â€œIâ€™m looking forward to working with the community, students and staff at the Highland district,â€ Aukerman said Tuesday. â€œItâ€™s a wonderful district to become a part of.â€
Aukerman has spent three years as the assistant superintendent in Berea.
Previously, she was the director of elementary education for Canton City Schools, a principal in Twinsburg City Schools and an elementary teacher for Cleveland City Schools.
Aukermanâ€™s contract expires July 31, 2011.
School board President Norm Christopher has said Aukermanâ€™s range of experience made her an excellent candidate for the position.
Aukerman was selected from a pool of 48 applicants.
On April 21, the public is invited to meet Aukerman at an informal reception following the regularly scheduled board of education meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Highland High School cafeteria.
