Just a few things to do while you’re in Akron

Quaker Square

History and the future merge at Quaker Square Inn at the University of Akron. The square, built in 1936 as a storage facility for the then Akron-based Quaker Oats Company, now serves as a hotel and as a residence hall for the University of Akron. Its 36 grain silos stand at 120 feet tall, and each room is perfectly round. The square also is home to a variety of shopping and restaurants. Just make sure you don’t leave without buying an oatmeal cookie from the Candy Store.

Akron Zoo

The perfect adventure for the kids, the Akron Zoo offers educational opportunities combined with zoo entertainment. New to the zoo this summer is “Jellies: Rhythm in the Blue,” an exhibit that includes 10 aquariums of seven different species of jellyfish.

Upcoming events include:

o “Snooze at the Zoo: Journey with the Jellyfish,” 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. July 5 to 6. Take a walk on the wild side and spend the night in Komodo Kingdom, the zoo’s education center. The event is for families with children ages 5 to 12. Cost is $18-$35.

o “Pajama Party — Froggy Fever,” 6 to 9 p.m. July 12. Pajama fun continues at the Akron Zoo, with a scavenger hunt, up-close animal encounters and bedtime snacks. Cost is $7-$14.

o “Come Alive with Jazz” series, 6 to 9 p.m. July 16. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music of the Dan Wilson Jr. Jazz Band in the Lehner Family Zoo Gardens. Refreshments and appetizers will be available for purchase.

Check out “Yours, Mine and Theirs: High Stakes Portraiture” at the Summit Art Space’s new exhibit, which opened Friday and runs through Aug. 2. The collection features artists Patrick Dougherty, John Smolke, Sean Berrodin and Stephen Csejtey.

Rib, White and Blue Food Festival

Who can cook up the best barbecue ribs? It’s a tough call. Let’s just hope there are enough bibs and hand wipes to go around.

3rd Annual National Hamburger Festival

Hours: Noon to 11 p.m. July 19 and noon to 7 p.m. July 20.
