Stallions stampede ahead

BOWLING GREEN — The under-11 Stallions baseball team galloped off with another title at the Bear Swamp Tournament at Bowling Green State University.

The Stallions won six straight games to capture their fifth tournament of the year. Next up is the AAU National Championship in Orlando, Fla.

Team members are Zack Timoteo, Collin Minor, Spencer Langager, Ryan Wheeler, Jake Vance, Jake Pallotta, Garret Strom, Jake Bokar, Alex Kuchta, Matt Merimee, Zeke Martin and Colin McManamon.

The coaches are Al Bokar, Kevin Minor, Derek Wheeler, Bob McManamon and Mike Martin.

BASEBALL: The Ron Pruitt Baseball Center will sponsor a fall league for the 12th straight year. There will be age divisions for 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17. For more information, call Ron Pruitt at 330-239-3606.

SOFTBALL: The Wizards, a coed team sponsored by Mizuno and Spitz, finished second at the Legends of the Game event at Kettering Fields in Dayton. Bryan Kaspar won the men’s home run derby competition, with Tracy Evans capturing the women’s event. The Wizards hit .579 in the tournament, with Glen Evans batting .867. Other top hitters were Kaspar (.750), Jamie Poe (.667) and Veronica Briggs (.571). Also contributing were Rob Poe, Mike Zgrabik, Todd Radzimski, Joe Walker, Alison O’Callaghan, Barb Carpenter and Debbie Stephens. The Wizards will compete at the Armco Tournament in Lebanon, Ohio, on July 12. … The Lafayette Girls Softball Association is sponsoring a canned and non-perishable food drive to benefit the Medina Coalition of Food Pantries on Deerview Lane in Lafayette Township. Anyone willing to make donations of food or paper bags should call Cyndi King at 330-769-1819. Volunteers are also welcome. Drop-off boxes are located at the Cloverleaf Recreation Center and the concession stand at the LGSA softball field at Lions Park in Chippewa Lake. Members of the LGSA will be at the July 4 parade in Chippewa Lake to collect donations. Cash and gift cards are also accepted by the food pantry.

BASKETBALL: Don & Ron’s Boys stayed in first place in the three-on-three men’s league at the Medina Community Recreation Center by defeating Newman 11-7, 6-11, 7-5 and Riot Makers 11-8, 6-11, 7-4. In other action a week ago, Newman beat Frontcourt 11-8, 11-9, Mo’s Misfits downed Frontcourt 11-8, 11-10, Riot Makers upended Trinity 11-7, 11-8 and Still Here got victories over Mo’s Misfits (11-9, 11-6) and Trinity (11-9, 11-5). In this week’s play, Riot Makers beat Still Here 11-8, 10-11, 7-1 and then downed Newman 11-8, 9-11, 7-4. Frontcourt edged Still Here 11-9, 11-8, then fell to Trinity 11-5, 5-11, 7-3. Mo’s Misfits rolled past Newman 11-7, 11-4, but lost to Don & Ron’s Boys 11-9, 11-8. Don & Ron’s Boys also beat Trinity 11-10, 11-6.

VOLLEYBALL: Hot Hitters swept MCRC 25-16, 25-10, 25-15 in the youth volleyball league at the Medina Community Recreation Center. Medina Mayhem routed Twisted Sisters 25-8, 25-21, 25-16, while XLR8ers nipped the Purple Lazers 25-15, 24-26, 25-23. In this week’s action, the Lazers trounced MCRC 25-11, 25-17, 25-10, with the XLR8ers blowing past Twisted Sisters 25-8, 25-8, 25-10. Medina Mayhem defeated Hot Hitters 22-25, 25-17, 25-15.

RUNNING: The 27th annual Lodi Sweet Corn Race and 29th 5-kilometer run will be held July 19 at 8:15 a.m. Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. at Lodi Elementary School. Entry fee is $12 if registered in advance and $17 the day of the event. For more information, call Todd Clark at 330-887-5272.

SWIMMING: Medina Recreation Swim Team members Samantha Petruzzi and Joey Reilman represented the Makos at the Indy Dolphins Summer Invitational in Indianapolis. More than 700 swimmers from six states were on hand. Petruzzi recorded six personal bests and four top-15 finishes, including a 12th in the 100-meter freestyle. Reilman recorded four PRs and six top-15 finishes, with a best of third in the 50 backstroke. A newcomer to the MRST squad, Jacob Scavuzzo, placed in two events at the Busby Invitational at Cleveland State University.

WRESTLING: Two athletes representing the Stinger Wrestling Club from Medina won gold medals at the Disney Duals in Orlando, Fla. Mike Scavuzzo earned gold in the 119-pound class with a perfect 13-0 record, while Brent Fiekel also went 13-0 to win at 125. Teddy Hammer finished second at 140, with Justin Yetzer placing third at 145. Mike Griffith (103), Jake Piatt (135) and Tom Kerrigan (189) finished fourth. Thirty-six community teams were at the event, with the Stinger Wrestling Club placing 17th.
