Brunswick Community Recreation Center
3637 Center Road, Brunswick
Hours: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Phone: 330-273-8000
Senior activities director: Julianne Keco
Rates: $99 for resident seniors age 60 and older for a new membership, $75 for a renewal. Day passes are available for $5; a six-visit punch card is $18.
General information: You do not have to be a Brunswick resident or member of the center to participate in seniors’ programs like nutrition, cards, clubs, exercise videos, movies, etc. You must be a member to walk the track, use the pool, gym or exercise equipment.

The August calendar offers a variety of activities for area seniors. Two free concerts in August are planned at the center. On Aug. 10, New Barley Corn plays at 6:30 p.m. on the outdoor stage. Stone Pony is here at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. The concert moves inside the center in case of inclement weather.

A new activity in August is Lunch at the Lake at noon on Aug. 25 at North Park on Grafton Road. For $3, you get a roasted hot dog, chips, a drink, cookies and fruit. You may bring a side dish to share. You need to sign up in advance for this activity.

Be aware the pool at the center is closed Aug. 25 through Sept. 1 for annual maintenance.

Don’t forget, the Fishing Club, the Knitting and Crocheting Group and the Recreation Center Senior Advisory Board do not meet and Congresswoman Betty Sutton’s representative does not come to the center during August. All activities resume in September.

There are no senior activities Sept. 1 due to the Labor Day holiday, but the center will be open from 8 a.m. to noon.
Speaking of September, there is a Farewell to Summer Dance from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 17. TC Rhythm provides the music. The $4 ticket price includes light refreshments and door prizes. Tickets are on sale now at the front desk.

Free bingo sponsored by Life Care Center of Medina will be played at 1 p.m. Aug. 11. Sign up in advance by calling the center or stopping at the front desk.

Couples dinner out
The couples dinner out group will meet at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Golden Corral in Medina. Sign up at the center or call by Aug. 15 for reservations. If you have to cancel, call the center so we can adjust the reservation. New couples are welcome.

Health clinics and programs
Southwest General Community Outreach Nurse Program will provide blood pressure checks (includes glucose screening if requested, no fasting), 9 a.m. to noon the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

Hiking group
The Senior Hikers Group meets at 9:30 a.m. each Friday in the back parking lot to explore local, county, metro parks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Inclement weather cancels the hike. The cost is $20 for new members and includes a T-shirt or $15 for returning hikers. The fee includes hot dog picnics several times during the season. The August hiking parks are: Aug. 8, a picnic at Blue Hen Falls at Cuyahoga Valley National Park; Aug. 15, Hymen’s in Brecksville; Aug. 22, Hunt Farm.

Monthly matinee
The free monthly matinee is at 1 p.m. on the third Thursday. The movie on Aug. 21 is “The Queen” (rated PG-13). As always, the movie, popcorn and drinks are free. The multipurpose room can be cool, so dress accordingly.

Nutrition site
The center is the nutrition site for Brunswick. Congregate meals are available at 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. You must register first with the Office for Older Adults by calling 330-225-7100 and asking for the office. Because meals are limited, call the kitchen after
10 a.m. on Wednesday or Friday at 330-273-8087 if you must cancel.

Outside the center
Open bowling is held at
1 p.m. Tuesdays at Dick Hoover’s Lanes, under Sally’s Party Center on Pearl Road.

R.O.M.E.O. Club
The R.O.M.E.O. Club (Retired Older Men Eat Out), for single, married and divorced men, meets at
11 a.m. the second Friday every month at a local restaurant. The Aug. 8 destination is Master Pizza in Brunswick. Sign up in advance at the front desk or by calling the center. You don’t have to be a Brunswick resident to join.

Senior calendars
Free senior calendars are available at the center, the library, the lobby of United Labor Towers and city hall.
To receive a calendar by mail, send a $6 check payable to the “City of Brunswick” with your name, address and phone number to: Brunswick Recreation Center, 3637 Center Road, Brunswick 44212.

Senior Net classes
August is registration time for September and October Senior Net classes held at Western Reserve Masonic Community, 4931 Nettleton Road, Medina Township. For more information, contact the coordinator, Gerald Wooding, at 330-666-8138 or glwoodling@aol.com.

Single Ladies dinner out
The Single Ladies dinner out group meets at 5 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month. The Sept. 3 destination is Pipers III in Broad-view Heights. Any single, divorced or widowed lady is welcome to join the group. Call the center for more information and reservations by the Monday prior
to the dinner.

The only performance at Carousel with seats left is “Wizard of Oz” on Oct. 8.
Be at the center by 7 a.m. Aug. 18 if you are going on the Meadows Casino trip. The bus leaves at 7:30 a.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m.

In order to put on a second bus for any trip, we must have at least 35 on a waiting list. If we do not have that number, we cannot commit to a second bus. There are three trips needing more people on the lists: Meadows Casino, Aug. 18; Greek town in Detroit, Sept. 4; and an overnight trip Nov. 17 and 18 to Grand Victoria River Boat Casino in Indiana. For $67 (double occupancy) you get dinner and breakfast buffets, a hotel room, bus transportation and driver’s tip. This is a real bargain.

Seats are available for “Whatcha’ Got Cookin’?” on Sept. 30. We are going to Walnut Creek/Berlin Amish country and sharing the trip with the Wadsworth seniors. The $65 fee includes candy-dipping, baked goods, fondue party, cheese sampling, peanut butter whip, winery samples, buffet at Grandma’s Alpine, bus and driver’s tip. Sign up soon if you want to pick up the bus in Brunswick.

General trip information: Reservations are taken with payment only. Leave your name and phone number if the trip is filled — a second bus may be added or a cancellation may occur. A non-resident fee of $1 is added to the cost of the trip. A $100 deposit is required for trips costing more than $200. The balance is due 45 days before departure. A medical form is required.

Pick up a complete trip list at the center, city hall or the library. If you want one sent to your home, call 330-273-8000 with your address.
