Labor Day weekend brings out troopers

MEDINA — The Medina post of the state highway patrol will be staffed at almost 100 percent today through Monday to crack down on violations during the Labor Day weekend.

“We’re very strict every holiday weekend, we always have been,” Lt. Joshua Swindell, commander of the Medina post, said. “The number of fatal accidents spikes every time.”

There are three areas troopers will focus on: speeding, driving under the influence and seat-belt violations.

“DUIs are a problem in Medina County,” Swindell said.

He said the goal of the increased number of troopers is to make their presence more visible. People seeing officers will make them less likely to drive drunk after holiday celebrations, Swindell said.

“People will see us and say, ‘OK, we better have a plan,’ ” he said.
