Clevelander sentenced to 8 years for assault

MEDINA — A Cleveland man convicted of assaulting a woman to whom he was giving a ride home in September 2007 was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday.

Deandre Bigelow, 31, pleaded guilty to kidnapping, a first-degree felony, as part of a plea agreement before the second day of his trial in May, county Prosecutor Dean Holman said.

While he was supposed to be taking the victim home from a Brunswick bar, he instead took her to a secluded area where he assaulted her, court records show.

Bigelow originally was charged with one count of rape, a first-degree felony. He tried to withdraw his guilty plea in June, but Common Pleas Judge James L. Kimbler denied it.

Bigelow has been in the Medina County Jail since his arrest in September.
