SOLON — Wadsworth girls tennis player Layne Connolly had her inspired postseason run end Saturday at the Solon Division I Sectional.
The sophomore fell to No. 2 seed Elise Griffin of Brecksville 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, falling one win short of advancing to the district tournament. Griffin is undefeated on the season.
Connolly is the first Grizzlies netter — girls or boys — to reach the sectional quarters since 2005.
“Layne played well despite losing and had a great tournament,†Wadsworth coach Jason Ball said.
At the Oberlin Division I Sectional, Highland’s doubles team of Olena Zyga and Danielle Hadler also made a spirited run to the quarters.
The duo reached the round of eight with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Grafton Midview’s Amanda Brezina and Alyx Plues before falling to second-seeded Julie Wang and Michelle Djohan from Westlake 6-3, 6-2.
