Hassan golden in Egypt

MEDINA — Amro Hassan isn’t getting older, he’s getting better.

The 49-year-old recently won eight gold medals and one silver in the 45-49 age division at the National Egyptian Masters swim meet.

Competing in Alexandria, Egypt, the Medina resident finished first in the 50-meter freestyle, 100 free, 200 free, 200 individual medley, 50 butterfly and 100 fly.

He added gold medals as part of the men’s 4×50 freestyle relay and mixed 4×50 individual medley while earning silver as a member of the men’s 4×50 IM.

Hassan trains regularly at the Medina Community Recreation Center.

BASKETBALL: The fourth-grade Medina Mavericks won the Independence Fall League championship by defeating Brecksville 45-9 in the title game. Jonathan Williams and Luke Schaefer had 14 points apiece, with Cade Pipoly, Jim Daw, Tyler Grabowski, John Curtis, Sam McKee and Nick Hoptry adding valuable contributions. The Mavericks, who are beginning Lake Erie League play, were 8-0 in the fall. … Newblood stayed in first place in the 18-and-over men’s league at the Medina Community Recreation Center with an 81-40 win over the Eagles. Dan Pincombe paced the victory with 24 points, while Tom Mayo had 13, Jose Cintron added 12 and John Stolarski chipped in 11. John Rodgers had 14 for the Eagles, while Vance Lewis added 11. Phishbowl got 15 points from Ryan Lehuta, 13 from Justin Wigley and 11 from Cory Wigley en route to a 63-50 win over J-Team, with got 26 from John Gory and 17 from Alex Gory. Frontcourt edged Drogell’s Landscape Design 59-56 behind 35 points from Danny Kelly and 14 from Mike Samano. Brian Drogell (20), Evan Goslee (18) and Travis Styers (14) paced Drogell’s. In the 30-and-over league, Mo’s Misfits beat Westfield Bank 69-51 behind 18 points from Ryan Sooy, 17 from Ryan Holliday, 14 from Seth Meyers and 13 from Todd Zufra. Jeff Stuart (14), Bill Linder (14) and Craig Bohl (11) paced Westfield. Otis Elevator got 17 points from David Schreiber and 11 each from Jeremy Metzger and Joe Campbell en route to a 49-44 victory over the Shockers, who received a game-high 16 from K.C. Gillespie. Johnny Malloy’s routed OMF 69-32 behind Rob Wininger (20), Ray Weaver (16) and Joe Rog (11). Lincoln Lafayette had 10 for OMF. Still Here edged Newman 55-50 behind 14 points from Ron Spears and 12 from Kevin Yelinek. Mike Linard (13) and Mike Hulthen (10) led Newman.

FOOTBALL: The Cloverleaf Colts junior varsity youth team defeated the Highland Hornets White squad 26-20 to win the National Conference championship in the Wadsworth Youth Football Association playoffs. It was the first championship for a Cloverleaf Youth Football Association team since the Seville Raiders and Lodi Buckeyes combined in 2005. Players on coach Ken Engel’s team were Jared Talmon, Russell Gretsinger, Kyle Sasinka, Vince Uhler, Jacob Rogers, Logan Engel, Conner Carneal, Brian Matheny, Todd Leborgne, Thomas Hill, Daniel Weinerman, Connor Werner, Anthony Kozma, Dylan Brooks, Jared Woodell, Logan Willis, Nathan Troutvine, Colin Wurgler, Curtis Cameron, Chase Demeter, Kyle Foster, Zach Johns, Jett Lacko, Chase Eby, Spencer Morgan, Jonathan Doty, Jaret Oberacker, Stephen Wallon, Zachary Sanders, Tate Surrarer, Christopher Gruber and Joseph Nespeca.

BOWLING: Barb Timko had a 187 game and Betty Roberts rolled a 500 series to lead all bowlers in the Tuesday Morning Ladies League at AMF Medina Lanes. In the Skully Jaxx League, Bobo Church had a 693 series and Bill Bricker Sr. rolled a 266 game. Ken Auckerman had high game (258) and Sonny Jurgen had high series (672) in the Lazor Insurance League. In the Mixed Couples League, Randy Clement (279-712), Clair McDermott (277), Vic Feist (713), Nikki Stitler (227-637), Jean Clement (215), Amber Maxwell (211-539) and Judy Zook (577) had big nights. Lisa Taylor (235-638), Dawn Salata (226-644) and Maxwell (224-581) led the way in the Thomas Properties League, while Tracy Easterday (269-737), Chris Ragnoni (279), Chad Daubenmire (279-708), Todd Daubenmire (269-733), Mark Raker (727), Bryan Laub (726), Jason Blankenship (717), Matthew Lutz (716) and Frank Purgai (703) paced the Jo Jo’s Sports Bar League. In the Mixed Classic Trio League, Bill Meyer had a 739 series, while Chuck Lupica III had 290-730. Ronald Boettcher rolled a 278 game.

VOLLEYBALL: One Shy of a Six-Pack defeated VB Power 25-21, 25-11, 25-14 to highlight play in the coed league at the Medina Community Recreation Center. Mighty Mortals No. 1 downed Mighty Mortals No. 2 25-11, 25-17, 25-10.

Colin Slykhuis, Jared Stack and Ryan Stallard were on the Medina Eagles bantam football team that won the Northeast Ohio Youth Football Conference championship. Sarah Urban and Gabrielle Urban were on the sixth-grade girls team that won the Stockman Basketball Youth Fall League.
