Cheers & Chidings

CHEERS: to all those who helped save the life of a man who had a heart attack while exercising at the Cloverleaf Recreation Center last week. Art Gittinger, Brian Rice, David Civittolo and Sean Hughes worked to revive the victim, who had stopped breathing. The rescuers utilized an Automated External Defibrillator, donated to the rec center by Lodi Community Hospital. The man reportedly is doing well and is expected to be home from the hospital soon.

CHEERS: to 2006 Medina High School grads Jamie McArthur and Chris Davis — film majors at Loyola University — for earning top honors in a documentary video contest to promote the city of Chicago as a site for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Their self-confessed last-minute entry bested 45 others in online voting to earn the grand prize: a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, to view preparations for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games.

CHEERS: to federal regulators for adopting sweeping new restrictions on the credit card industry to better protect consumers, especially those impacted by the economic downturn. The rules prevent companies from enacting arbitrary rate hikes and from giving cardholders inadequate time to pay their bills. Unfortunately for consumers suffering now, the tighter restrictions — expected to cost the industry more than $10 billion per year — will not take effect until July 2010.
