Cheers to the New Year

What will be in your hand as you toast to 2009?

A glass of champagne is the easy answer, but Tom Virosteck, owner of the new Cana Wine and Martini Bar, 113 W. Smith Road, Medina, offers some other advice.

“Absolutely something different, because it’s the New Year,” Virosteck said. “Martinis because of the classic glass — it’s a staple in high society. We can all drink martinis and feel important.”

If that suits your mood, Fred Salerno, one of the bartenders at Cana, suggests partygoers opt for a martini with more than three ingredients in it.

“Just because it’s New Year’s Eve, and they want something special,” Salerno said.

If you’re hosting your own New Year’s bash, Cana Wine and Martini Bar provided four simple martini recipes to get you started:

Carmel Apple Martini
1½ ounces sour apple
2 ounces premium vodka
½ ounce butterscotch schnapps
1 cup of ice
Dash of grenadine

Pour the sour apple, schnapps and vodka into a shaker. Add ice and shake. The longer the shake, the colder the drink.
Strain into a martini glass and add a splash of grenadine.

Peppermint Pomegranate Martini

1½ ounces pomegranate liquor
2 ounces vanilla vodka
1 cup of ice
Dash of peppermint schnapps
Miniature candy canes
Crush candy canes in a bag using rolling pin. Wet rim of martini glass. Roll edge in crushed candy canes.
Add vodka and pomegranate liquor to shaker. Shake and strain into glass and garnish with miniature candy cane over the rim.

Cherry Cordial

1½ ounces vodka
1 ounce Bailey’s
1½ ounces Godiva liquor
cherry juice to taste
Garnish glass with chocolate sauce and cherries.

Gingerbread Cosmo

2 ounces vanilla vodka
1 ounce cranberry juice
1 cup of ice
Dash of butterscotch schnapps
Shake with ice and pour in butterscotch after mixed.
