Logan Boyd

Logan Boyd earned his angel wings at home with his parents Wednesday, March 11, 2009, after a valiant fight with cancer.

Born Jan. 24, 1991, in Barberton to Craig and Michele Boyd, Logan was a warrior who squeezed every ounce of life out of his 18 years. He was fortunate to travel the world during his short time. His universe was widened by he and his parents hosting six foreign exchange students and his sponsorship of a student in India for more than a decade. He just recently received a scholarship to Flagler College in Florida. Logan’s brave battle against cancer was the inspiration for the Survivor Kids Annual Putt-Putt Challenge in Medina.

Intelligent and tremendously talented, Logan ran cross country and performed as a percussionist with the marching band at Medina High School, as well as being an accomplished pianist. His dear friends, Kyle, Erica, Morgan, Tyler, Sean, Matt, Chris and many others shared a zest for life that often brought him … experience!

Logan and his parents owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Steven Kuerbitz and the staff at Akron Children’s Hospital and Dr. Pete Anderson of MD Anderson, Houston, Texas. Their care and dedication allowed Logan to continue to enjoy summers at Lake Erie, be a regular at Fox Meadows CC … dining room, and help elect Barack Obama president this past fall.

He and his parents were always upbeat about his treatments, even when they included eating macrobiotic sludge and inhaling scorpion venom. The Ohio University movie chronicling a portion of his life is eagerly anticipated.

He is survived by his parents, Craig and Michele Boyd of Medina; grandparents, Gene and Darlene Kovack of Wadsworth; aunts and uncles, Mark and Alissa Kovack of Pembolton, Ohio, Mike Kovack of Medina, Steve Kovack of Medina, Linda Schmidt of Miami, Bill and Linda Boyd of Miami, Alan Boyd of Hollywood, Fla., Patricia Boyd of Mooresville, N.C.; cousins, Michael, Madison and Lauren; special cousins, Cindy, Fred and Connie; and pet pigs, Snausage, Rowser and Jimmy Dean.

Logan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Gert Boyd, and uncle, Carlos Schmidt.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 13, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carlson Funeral Home, 3477 Medina Road, Medina. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Prince of Peace Parish, 1263 Shannon Ave., Barberton with the wake to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Akron Children’s Hospital Showers Family Clinic, One Perkins Square, Akron, 44308.
