Fred John Schwab, 57, of Medina, passed away Friday, March 13, 2009. He was born October 8, 1951 in Corry, Pennsylvania to Fred and Jane (Feldhus) Schwab, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Schwab was a graduate of Grove City College, where he played basketball his entire career. He was a representative with Eriez Magnetics, later owning his own company, SECO, for 21 years, now known as Robertson Equipment Company.
While residing in Medina, Fred was very committed to the Medina community. Athletics were one of his passions, particularly Medina High School basketball, serving as a mentor to a number of young basketball players. Fred rarely missed a game. He coached many youth teams from the Maverick’s basketball team to girls’ lacrosse, later becoming a certified girls’ lacrosse referee for Northeast Ohio. He was actively involved in the Medina Athletic Boosters Club. Fred’s hobbies and interests also led him to giving back to the community. For many years, he assisted with the YWCA of Medina County’s “Twin Sizzler” bike race. Fred always found time to help those in need.
Fred served on the Medina Community Recreation Center Advisory Council from its inception in 2001. Most recently, Fred gave his time and commitment to Hospice of Medina County. He led the board as president and was a driving force behind the development of a Hospice Center in Medina County.
Many know Fred from his many hobbies and accomplishments. He was an avid runner for many years, running nine marathons, competing in triathlons and bike races. Fred’s most recent hobby was scuba diving and he recently became a certified rescue diver.
Fred left this world with dignity and grace. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Sue (Patterson); sons, Travis and Tyler (Carrie); and his daughter, Tiffany. He leaves brothers, Rick (Kristi) of Clifton, Virginia, Bob (Cheryl) of Clemmons, North Carolina; nephews Jeff and Brad; nieces Alleta and Siri; in-laws, Irvin and Sally Patterson of Pleasantville, Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, Randy (Bethany) Patterson of Charlotte, North Carolina; aunt, Corrine Staveley; and numerous cousins.
Visitation will be Monday, March 16, 2009 from 2 to 9 P.M. at Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina, where the funeral service will be Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 11 A.M. Rev. David Anderson and Rev. Thomas Schwartz will officiate. A private burial will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery.
