‘Tea party’ planned in Medina
Allison Wood | The Gazette
MEDINA — While they won’t be dumping tea into the Boston Harbor, local residents will have their own “tea party†on Public Square to protest wasteful government spending and high taxes.
The rally will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the deadline to file federal income taxes.
Some of those scheduled to speak include state Rep. William Batchelder, R-Medina; Medina County Commissioner Sharon Ray; former congressional candidate Matt Miller; Chris Long, president of the Ohio Christian Alliance; as well as business owners and college students.
Medina resident Amy Brighton, who is one of the organizers of Wednesday’s event, said recent bank bailouts and talk of tax increases are causing people around the country to worry about the increasing role of government in society.
“If you give the American people more money, they can purchase goods and invest in businesses,†she said.
The Medina rally is one of hundreds of “tea parties†being held nationwide; regionally, rallies will be held in Cleveland, Canton and Ashland.
While the main sponsors of the rally are local conservative and Republican organizations, Brighton said excessive government spending is something that has angered people of all political affiliations.
“A lot of people resonate with this message,†she said. “They have a family budget and watch their money.â€
While Brighton said she hopes for a large turnout, she thinks many participants will arrive late because people are still at work at 4 p.m.
