Nearly ready for moving in

Medina Creative Housing has one project that will come to fruition this summer, and its next venture is in the pipeline.

The Medina Creative Living development at North Huntington Street and West Reagan Parkway in Medina will host its first residents at the start of July. The project will have 12 single units and four two-bedroom units that will allow developmentally and physically handicapped individuals to live independently.

Construction soon may begin on Brunswick Creative Living, an eight-unit development at Foxwood Terrace to be modeled after the Medina project.

MCH Director Dianne DePasquale-Hagerty said the projects allow residents to live independently but also give them a chance to cooperate with each other.

“There will be a community room — activities; it will provide them a real sense of community and social outlets for the residents,” she said.

Both projects were funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

DePasquale-Hagerty said the units have prospective residents, as the company already has more than 100 clients on its housing waiting list. Those living in the units will be expected to pay 30 percent of their adjusted gross income.

DePasquale-Hagerty said she expects a ribbon-cutting for the Medina location sometime next month. In addition, she said construction in Brunswick could begin this summer and be completed by the end of the year.

There are a few hurdles the group has to clear first before breaking ground.

The proposed site for Brunswick Creative Living — two parcels totaling 4.3 acres at the dead-end of Foxwood Terrace — is zoned rural residential. However, the single-unit clusters MCH wants to construct on one parcel would need commercial general zoning. In addition, MCH hopes to leave the second parcel open for future single-family homes, which would need low-density residential zoning.

The city’s planning commission has approved the zoning changes, but City Council must approve any rezoning.

DePasquale-Hagerty said MCH only will receive HUD funds if a strict timeline is followed.

“We are nearing our timeframe, so we are hoping to expedite this and get this moving forward,” she said.

To help the group do that, Brunswick City Council will have two special meetings on the rezoning.

MCH “has always been a good community partner; they’ve always provided quality housing for their clients,” said Joseph Delsanter, Ward 3 councilman and vice mayor.

Since Council can’t pass zoning legislation as an emergency, which would require only one public reading, members must read the creative housing rezoning ordinance three times. The first reading will be at Monday’s regular Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Council also will meet in special sessions at 5:45 p.m. May 20 and at the same time May 21.

If Council approves it, the rezoning will be effective 30 days after the approval.
