Man dies in stabbing

MEDINA — A 34-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed her uncle several times in his Branch Road apartment Monday night is being held on a murder charge.

Daniel Barnett, the brother of Tracy Jewel Salter-Johnson, called 911 at 8:04 p.m. and said she told him she stabbed Gary Barnett, 60, several times and he was dead.

“I guess she stabbed my uncle because he was trying to do something to her,” said Daniel Barnett, who was driving to the apartment during the call.

Police had to forcibly enter the apartment after Salter-Johnson refused to open the door, police Lt. Bob Starcher said. Inside on the floor between the kitchen and dining room, they found Barnett’s body with multiple stab wounds.

Salter-Johnson struggled with officers, who were forced to pull her down to the floor, Starcher said.

Medina County Coroner Neil Grabenstetter declared Barnett dead at the scene, Starcher said.

Salter-Johnson had been staying with Barnett at 875 Branch Road, Apt. A9, on and off for the last few months, police reported.

Police received reports of disturbances at the apartment many times, with the last call just two hours before the stabbing.

“You guys have been there so many times, you should know the address,” Daniel Barnett said during the 911 call.

At about 6 p.m., a resident in the apartment complex claimed Barnett threw a liquor bottle off his apartment’s balcony and aimed it at an 11-year-old boy.

Bond had not been set Tuesday for Salter-Johnson, who is being held in the Medina County Jail.

A Medina County grand jury will determine if additional charges will be filed, Starcher said.

Agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation also responded and assisted with processing the crime scene, he said.
