MEDINA TWP. — Two Medina men were killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Hamilton Road.

At 5:47 p.m., a 1998 GMC Jimmy driven by Jeffrey T. Coleman, 31, was eastbound on Hamilton near Marks Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control on a curve, Sgt. Matthew Witmer of the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Coleman’s vehicle slid broadside across the center line and hit a westbound 2007 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Susan L. Haury, 40, also of Medina.

Both sport utility vehicles caught fire. Several residents of nearby houses used garden hoses and fire extinguishers to help put out the flames, Witmer said, until township firefighters arrived.

Coleman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. His passenger, Kristopher R. Utzler, 32, also died at the scene. It is unclear whether Utzler was wearing his seat belt or whether he died on impact, Witmer said.

Haury was trapped in her vehicle for nearly an hour while rescuers attempted to extricate her. She was transported by emergency helicopter to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center, he said.

Her condition was not available at press time.

The accident remains under investigation, Witmer said.
