County to host commissioners conference

MEDINA — Medina County commissioners will spend three days next week in Wadsworth hosting the annual County Commissioners Association of Ohio’s summer conference.

Commissioner Pat Geissman said she’s pleased Medina County will have the opportunity to be showcased during the conference from Wednesday through Aug. 21 at the Galaxy Restaurant on Park Centre Drive.

“People know Medina County, but they don’t know it,” she said. “We can give them a taste.”

This year’s conference will be held in tandem with County Commissioner Days, a two-day event sponsored annually by the host board of commissioners and the Ohio State University Extension. Besides showcasing the county, it’s an opportunity for OSU Extension staff to inform and update commissioners throughout the state about Extension offerings.

This year’s joint CCAO/Extension meeting will cover “Effective Government Through Collaboration.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to take one of four tours, with stops including Elm Farm and Dairy Museum, Medina’s Public Square, Hinckley Reservation, MTD Inc. in Liverpool Township and Root Candles in Medina.

Every tour will include a visit to the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

Geissman, who represents Medina County on the CCAO board of trustees, said she has lobbied to host the conference in Medina County for several years but until recently there was no conference area large enough to host the group.

About 150 officials are expected to attend, she said.

The CCAO represents Ohio’s 87 boards of county commissioners and the Summit County Executive and Council. The association advocates on behalf of counties at the state and federal levels, provides training and technical assistance programs, and offers cost-saving service programs for Ohio counties, according to www.ccao.org.

Along with the CCAO meeting, the Ohio County Dog Wardens Association and the Ohio County Administrators Association will meet.
