SHARON TWP. — A Wadsworth Township man who reportedly beat a dog to death with a metal fence post Saturday is charged with animal cruelty.
According to a Medina County sheriff’s report:
A Wadsworth woman reported at 7:52 p.m. Saturday her 9-year-old rottweiler-labrador mix died while it was being kept at her boyfriend’s home in the 7500 block of State Road. The boyfriend’s father, James Mills Sr., 71, of 9954 Mennonite Road, was watching the dog while the woman and her boyfriend were out for the day.
Mills told deputies he was chopping wood on the property and said the dog was barking at him and jumping around in its approximately 7-foot-high kennel. He said he went in the cage to give the dog water and said he brought the metal pole inside to calm the dog.
Mills told deputies he hit the dog three to four times with the post on its front and back end. He said the dog was not being aggressive toward him and it was still alive when he left the cage.
Mills was taken to the Medina County Jail on Monday and released on $1,000 bond Tuesday.
