Skate park fight leads to charges for dad, 2 teens

MEDINA — Two teenagers and one of their fathers are facing charges following a fight at the city’s skate park that made its way onto YouTube.

The video from the Sept. 2 incident shows two boys, both 17, fighting near the skate park ramps in front of other teenagers. After about 2½ minutes, one of the boys is on top of the other and appears to be winning.

Out of the corner of the screen, a man runs in and pulls the top boy off the other. The man, identified as Jason Matthews, 43, of 3052 Hood Road, Medina Township, is the father of the boy on the bottom, police records show.

On the video, Matthews is heard yelling at the other boy, who walks away. A few seconds later, Matthews’ son runs after the other boy and they begin fighting again.

During this fight, Matthews walks away. The video ends a short time later when the boys run off.

Matthews was charged with complicity to commit assault, and his son and the other boy were charged in Juvenile Court, records show.

Matthews pleaded not guilty to the first-degree misdemeanor charge Wednesday in Medina Municipal Court and a trial is scheduled for Nov. 17.
