SHARON TWP.— An 81-year-old Wadsworth woman died Sunday after she was struck by a vehicle while walking on State Road.
The Medina post of the Ohio Highway Patrol reported that Vivian Bernhard was struck about 10:35 a.m. by a 1997 Plymouth Breeze driven by Joshua Smith, 27, of Brunswick. Smith saw her standing in the road and tried to avoid her but struck her as she started to cross the road, a patrol news release said.
Sharon Township Ambulance and Fire Department transported Bernhard to the hospital. Smith was uninjured.
The accident remains under investigation, but the patrol does not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a factor in the incident.
John Bernhard, 83, said his wife of 44 years “was a good woman who had a lot of friends.”
“She couldn’t hear very well,” he said. “I guess she didn’t hear the car coming. There’s still investigating to do.”
Vivian Bernhard belonged to the Medina chapter of the Order the Eastern Star Masonic Temple for 40 years, he said.
“She was my wife; I’ll miss her,” he said. “She was the one person I could depend on.”
