MEDINA — Medina County Drug Abuse Commission Director Brian Nowak received training at the Mayo Clinic on tobacco treatment last year. Now, he’s putting his knowledge to work for county residents.
MCDAC and the Medina County Health Department are teaming up to help people kick their nicotine habit. Nowak will meet with those who want to quit smoking at the Health Department, 4800 Ledgewood Drive, Medina Township, to help them design a personalized quit plan in one-on-one 30-minute sessions.
Nowak said the training helps people figure out quitting strategies that will work best.
“But I think supportive counseling also shows a higher rate of success,” he said.
Nowak said there are endless advantages of quitting smoking, but individuals need to decide for themselves why to quit.
“Like people say, no one quits smoking. They quit for a higher reason, and you have to find that higher reason,” he said. “I try to help them do that.”
The training is free and appointments are available every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Call Dawn Shonkwiler in the Health Department’s Public Health Nursing Division at (330) 723-9688 or (888) 723-9688 for an appointment.
