26 charged in drug sting focusing on Brunswick bars

BRUNSWICK — In a “smokescreen” operation, more than 60 agents from the Medway Drug Enforcement Agency and supporting departments arrested 26 people Thursday on drug charges in the Brunswick area.

The arrests, part of Operation Nebelwand, were made Thursday night by seven different teams in Medina County, several communities in Cuyahoga County and elsewhere, Medway director Dave Smith said.

“It takes a lot to pull something like this off,” he said Friday.

Nebelwand means smokescreen in German.

The 11-month investigation showed a heavy amount of drug-trafficking activity in and out of Brunswick bars, he said.

Four of those indicted by a Medina County grand jury already were incarcerated in correctional facilities.

Of the 26 arrested, there were no designated leaders but many knew of and worked with each other, Smith said.
