Browns Town wants James

BEREA —Maybe the greatest scorer in Cleveland sports could help the anemic Browns offense put some points on the scoreboard.

He surely thinks so.

Cavaliers superstar LeBron James said Tuesday he could be “really good” if he dedicated himself to football. On Wednesday, the Browns embraced the idea.

“I think he should come on down,” coach Eric Mangini said. “I know he’s pretty busy right now, but if he wants to give it a shot.

“The guy’s gifted, gifted athletically. He’s competitive, he’s tough. He’s probably good in baseball, or soccer or swimming. The guy’s a freak athletically.”

James is listed at 6-foot-8, 250 pounds. The size and speed would seem perfectly suited for tight end, where linebackers and safeties would struggle to cover him. He was an All-Ohio receiver as a junior at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School before focusing solely on basketball.

“If I put all my time and commitment into it, if I dedicated myself to the game of football, I could be really good,” he said. “No matter what team I was on.”

The Browns, who rank last in the NFL in yardage and points, would be first in line.

“Tell him to suit up and let us know, we’ll get him working,” quarterback Brady Quinn said. “Obviously he’s an incredibly talented athlete. If he wants to try to play a little bit now, we’d be more than willing to pick him up.”

Quinn is looking for anyone who can make a play, especially when he’s throwing to rookie receivers and journeyman tight ends. James would provide a nice target in the red zone —if the Browns were fortunate enough to get there —as Quinn could just throw it up and let James jump and get it.

“Anywhere else on the field, too,” Quinn said.

Nose tackle Shaun Rogers is a huge basketball fan and attends a lot of Cavaliers games. He isn’t so sure the transition would be smooth for James.

“I heard that comment. I have mixed emotions about that,” Rogers said. “A great athlete, yes. A football player, no.

“It’s a punishing game. I just don’t think you can step off the basketball court after not going through this year in and year out and just play football.”

What if James had a year to train?

“He might make a heckuva tight end,” Rogers said. “I’d like to see him out there running down the seam.”

One Response to “Browns Town wants James”

This is rich!!! Not the thought of James. That could actually happen after a full year of training. What’s funny is Scott Petrak saying “…Quinn is looking for anyone who can make a play, especially when he’s throwing to rookie receivers and journeyman tight ends…” BQ needs to learn how to throw first! You know… Farther than 3 yrds per play (BQ’s avg. pass yards per completion)All the downfield throws I saw him throw, sailed 10-20 yrds over the recievers heads. Quinn is pure garbage!!!
