18-year-old teen critically injured in crash on Abbeyville

YORK TWP. — An 18-year-old Brunswick resident is in critical condition at Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center following two accidents within minutes of each other Thursday afternoon in the 4300 block of Abbeyville Road.

Kyle Lezark, a student at the Medina County Career Center, was northbound in his car, a Saturn, about 1:15 p.m. and apparently was trying to pass a Honda Civic, Ohio Highway Patrol Sgt. Tim Dearmitt said. A witness, who was headed south on Abbeyville Road, said Lezark jerked back to the right of the center lane and “lost control and slid
broadways,” hitting a pine tree along the passenger side of his car, Dearmitt said.

“It’s a good thing he didn’t have a passenger,” he said.

Tim Dearmitt of the Ohio Highway Patrol. (Audrey McCrone / Gazette)

Lezark was in critical condition Thursday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Granger Township resident Christopher Brodzinski, 19, the driver of the Honda, said he “was like 10, 15, maybe 20 cars ahead of (Lezark) and he speeds up and goes to go around me, and almost clips my front end and the blue truck” that was heading in the opposite direction.

“He came back over” into the right lane and “lost control when he hit the gravel,” he said.

“I slowed down,” but Lezark swerved and crashed, Brodzinski said. He said he pulled into a driveway to go check on Lezark and then called 911 on his cell phone.

Following the crash, Dearmitt said a pickup pulled to the side of the road, “two to three feet into the lane.”

Driver Michael Shanno, 47, of Liverpool Township, said he stopped to check on Lezark.
Shanno and Brodzinski were standing by the pine tree with Lezark’s Saturn wrapped around it when a second crash occurred, they said.

A car went around Shanno’s truck without a problem, but the Mazda behind it did not see it in time and crashed into the rear end of it, pushing it into Brodzinski’s Honda in the driveway, Dearmitt said.

The Mazda was driven by Cody Muhek, 19, of York Township, Trooper Alex Tot said.
Lezark may be charged with improper passing, Dearmitt said.
