Quick hits from Browns OTAs

BEREA — The Browns began organized team activities Monday and were scheduled for their third straight day of practice Wednesday. Coach Eric Mangini met with the media before practice.

Here are some of the highlights:

** He would like the five restricted free agents, who’ve been absent from OTAs, to attend but said the positive is more repetitions for the guys who are there. He mentioned running backs Montario Hardesty, James Davis and Peyton Hillis as the beneficiaries of Jerome Harrison’s absence.

** Kicker Phil Dawson has one year and $1 million left on his contract, but skipped OTAs for the second straight season. Mangini had the opportunity to threaten Dawson’s place on the team, but didn’t. Instead, he praised Dawson’s work last season and throughout his 11-year career.

** Nose tackle Shaun Rogers won’t practice today as he rehabs from a broken ankle suffered near the end of last season. Mangini said he didn’t have an update on the possible discipline Rogers faces from the NFL following a gun charge. Mangini did say the arrest at the airport didn’t change his opinion of Rogers.

“No. I think people make mistakes,” Mangini said. “It’s an important thing to learn from mistakes and grow from it.”

** Punter Dave Zastudil (knee), defensive end C.J. Mosley (knee) and linebacker Eric Barton (neck) are rehabbing from surgeries and didn’t practice.
