Akron man guilty of vehicular homicide

MEDINA — Common Pleas Judge James L. Kimbler found an Akron man guilty Thursday on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Kimbler ruled Ference Schmidt, 20, was reckless while speeding in his Dodge Charger on U.S. Route 224 at approximately 7 p.m. on Oct. 10, 2008, in Harrisville Township. Schmidt waived his right to a jury trial.

Schmidt hit a Pontiac Montana driven by Lawrence Erb, 84, as it crossed Route 224 heading north on Harris Road. Erb and his wife, Betty, 79, died as a result of their injuries. Schmidt suffered minor injuries and his passenger, Patrick D. Dario, also of Akron, sustained serious injuries.
