Circuit breaker causes power outages in Medina

MEDINA — A problem with a circuit breaker at an Ohio Edison substation caused widespread power outages, temporarily
closing businesses and clogging traffic on state Route 42 in Medina, officials said.

Eleven thousand customers likely were affected by the outages throughout the day, Ohio Edison spokesman Mark Durbin said.

Durbin said a wire at Fenn Road and state Route 42 short circuited, which could have caused intermittent outages around that area throughout the morning and early afternoon. He said at 2 p.m. the wire shortage caused a problem in a circuit breaker on a substation at North State Road, causing a longer outage in the area.

Ohio Edison had restored the power by 3:07 p.m., Durbin said.

Medina’s Service Director Nino Piccoli said the traffic lights on state Route 42 would reset every time the power failed, causing traffic backups.

“We’re getting a lot of calls,” Piccoli said during the outages.
