Browns CB Eric Wright leaves practice; observations from camp

BEREA — The Browns’ best healthy defensive player is no longer completely healthy.

Cornerback Eric Wright, who’s had a great start to training camp, limped off the field Tuesday morning with his right hamstring wrapped and iced. The injury didn’t appear to be too serious, as the trainers tried to stretch the muscle before wrapping it. But it will probably be enough to sideline him for the preseason opener Saturday night in Green Bay.

Right tackle Tony Pashos didn’t practice after hurting his right shoulder Monday. Coach Eric Mangini said he expects him back toward the end of the week. Pashos is in a battle to start, and the time off doesn’t help. He missed the start of camp with the flu.

“The best way to make a case for yourself is to be on the field,” Mangini said.

Other thoughts from the Tuesday morning practice and Mangini’s news conference.

** Linebacker Marcus Benard was having a great practice before leaving the field on a cart after an apparent shoulder injury. He dominated the one-on-one pass-rush drill, even putting Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas on the ground.

** Cornerback Brandon McDonald missed his second straight practice with an ankle injury. Mangini said it’s not related to McDonald’s dive into the end zone Saturday after returning an interception for a touchdown. But Mangini used the episode to teach the players the health risks of over-the-top or unnecessary celebrations.

** Mangini said the team’s social media policy is a “work in progress” after rookie cornerback Joe Haden tweeted about Mangini leveling a $1,760 fine for a phone alarm going off in a meeting. The tweet came Monday, just hours after Mangini gave the players a lecture on social media.

Haden saw increased time with the starters with Wright and McDonald sidelined.

** Rookie safety T.J. Ward intercepted a deep pass from Jake Delhomme in seven-on-sevens.

** Joshua Cribbs made a nice catch deep down the sideline from Seneca Wallace.

** Running back Peyton Hillis was busy, catching a variety of passes.

** Phil Dawson missed a 48-yarder off the left upright, made a 57-yarder, missed wide left from 56 and made from 33 in end-of-game and two-minute drills.
