State patrol backs off 100-mph chase for safety
A state trooper was involved in a vehicle pursuit with a motorist who surpassed the 100-mph mark Saturday evening in Medina County.
Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper John Beler chased a white Volkswagon GTI for an approximately 10-mile stretch along south Interstate 71, State Route 303 and North Carpenter in Brunswick. The pursuit, which began about 7:33 p.m. Saturday, went on for about 10 miles and was discontinued to preserve the safety of other motorists.
“We ended up terminating the pursuit because it was getting too risky for traffic,” Beler said.
At one point during the chase, Beler said the driver went off the road into a grassy park off of North Carpenter Road in Brunswick. He or she then ventured back onto east Route 303 and continued to “dangerously” pass traffic.
Beler said the Saturday pursuit was one of three over the Labor Day weekend in Medina County. He reported that vehicle crashes in the area were held to a minimum over the holiday weekend.
