Powerful thunderstorms blast Ohio on Thursday

WOOSTER — Storms that blasted through Ohio with powerful winds and large hail have left destruction at an Ohio State University campus, flipped over mobile homes and injured several people.

A lab building was reduced to a pile of bricks and equipment, greenhouses were destroyed and trees uprooted at the Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, 50 miles south of Cleveland. Officials tell The Daily Record there were no reported injuries.

About a dozen people were hurt in southeast Ohio’s Athens County, where mobile homes were overturned, temporarily trapping some residents. WBNS-TV of Columbus reports the sheriff’s office knows of no fatalities.

American Electric Power reported about 18,600 customers had no service Friday morning.
