Tennis: Ali Garrity moves on to districts
OBERLIN — Medina sophomore Ali Garrity was the only Medina County tennis player to advance to districts out of the Oberlin Division I Sectional.
On Thursday, the fourth-seeded Garrity beat Avon Lake’s Allison Moore 6-0, 6-0 and then Westlake’s Stephanie McAllister 6-1, 6-0 to earn the berth.
She opened the tourney with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brunswick’s Kristie Oravec.
Garrity will return to the courts Saturday to play for district seeding position. She opens against second-seeded Noelle Kaufman of Magnificat.
The storybook run of the sectional belonged to Cloverleaf sophomore Ashley Ritchie.
The unseeded Ritchie began the sectional knocking off Avon’s Laura Schmitz 6-2, 6-4. She followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Amherst’s Jordan Ford and a 6-2, 6-2 win over North Olmsted’s Katherin Harmon.
Ritchie’s magical ride ended one win from districts in the quarterfinals when she lost to third-seeded Maddy Lugli 6-2, 6-3.
