BEREA – Outside linebacker Marcus Benard was treated and released from the hospital Thursday night at 8:15 after collapsing just before noon in the locker room.
The Browns said he underwent tests and will undergo further evaluation today.
The players were finishing getting dressed for practice when Benard collapsed. He was sitting in a chair talking on a cell phone when he fell backward. Linebacker Matt Roth called for help, and trainers rushed to Benard’s side.
He didn’t appear to lose consciousness, but made no effort to get up. Just minutes earlier, he talked to reporters and seemed fine.
Benard was sitting up on a stretcher as he entered an ambulance at 12:26. He was listed on the official injury report with an “illness” and wasn’t ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jets.
Benard leads the team with 4½ sacks. He’s in his second year after signing as an undrafted rookie from Jackson State. He plays mostly in passing situations and has 13 tackles and a pass breakup.
