JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jaguars scored a touchdown with 30 seconds left in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
David Garrard threw a 5-yard slant to Mike Thomas, who beat Sheldon Brown to the inside. It capped a 13-play, 68-yard drive. The Jaguars converted a pair of third-and-5s on the drive with 9-yard out to tight end Zach Miller and a 6-yard Garrard scramble.
The Browns had taken a 7-3 lead after a remarkable drive.
Not only did it cover 92 yards, take 16 plays and use 9:57, the Browns overcome a sack and a false start on right tackle John St. Clair that left them with a second-and-21.
Colt McCoy converted a third-and-11 with a deep out to Mohamed Massaquoi, who made the catch despite it being tipped late by safety Sean Considine. Then McCoy pulled a Houdini.
He appeared to be in the grasp of lineman Terrance Knighton, but managed to duck out of it and flip to running back Peyton Hillis, who scored from 11 yards.
Hillis has 10 touchdowns in his first season with the Browns, and was especially effective catching the ball in the first half.
Browns kicker Phil Dawson was wide on a 51-yard field goal, ending his streak of 13 straight makes and failing to pad the lead. Hillis moved the Browns into scoring territory with a 47-yard catch-and-run down the sideline, but a pass interference on receiver Brian Robiskie later cost the Browns 10 crucial yards.
The long Hillis completion likely would’ve gone for a touchdown if tight end Benjamin Watson had been able to hold a block downfield. Watson returned to the game after leaving with an ankle injury and having it retaped.
A little trickery backfired on the Jaguars, as running back Maurice Jones-Drew was intercepted by safety Abram Elam. Jones-Drew took a pitchout right, pulled up and appeared to have receiver Mike Thomas open down the sideline. But Elam closed the gap and made the pick.
