BEREA — Browns rookie Colt McCoy didn’t practice Wednesday with a high left ankle sprain, the third suffered by a Cleveland quarterback this season.
Coach Eric Mangini said McCoy’s injury was slightly different than those to Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, who were sidelined for a month, but in the same category.
“I’m optimistic it will be quicker than that,” Mangini said. “But we’ve been through quite a few of them recently, which tempers my optimism.”
Mangini wouldn’t rule out McCoy for Sunday, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be able to play against the Carolina Panthers (1-9).
Mangini said Delhomme would get the bulk of the first-team repetitions in practice without McCoy, meaning he’s in line to make his first start since the opener. Delhomme played seven seasons in Carolina, and Mangini cited his familiarity with the Panthers as a reason he would get the nod over Wallace.
“We’ll see what happens, but it is ironic,” Delhomme said of a return to the field against his former team.
Wallace replaced Delhomme in Week 2 and played well before suffering his high ankle sprain. He was the backup to McCoy on Sunday in Jacksonville, while Delhomme was the No. 3.
“It’s a coach’s decision,” Wallace said. “I really can’t say too much about it. He’s calling the shots.”
McCoy wasn’t in the locker room during the period open to the media. Mangini said the fact that it’s his left ankle is a positive because it’s not the push-off foot.
** Several other players missed practice, and Mangini doesn’t expect cornerback Eric Wright (knee) and linebacker Scott Fujita (knee) to play Sunday.
Receiver/returner Joshua Cribbs (dislocated toes), defensive back Mike Adams (abdomen), tight end Benjamin Watson (ankle) and linebacker Eric Barton (thigh) also missed, but Mangini remained hopeful they would be able to practice this week.
