BEREA — Browns coach Eric Mangini named rookie quarterback Colt McCoy the starter for Sunday in Cincinnati and the rest of the season.
Mangini, who’s known for keeping his quarterback decisions a secret for as long as possible, made the announcement Thursday at the opening of his news conference.
“He earned the chance to play these three games,” Mangini said. “He did a real good job when he played, he improved every single week.
“I’m excited about this opportunity for him and for us. It’s really a testament to his work ethic throughout the course of the season, the way he has taken coaching, not only from the coaching staff but from players. He’s been like a sponge.”
McCoy went 2-3 as a starter before missing the last three games with a high left ankle sprain. He made it through a full practice Wednesday, which was the final question Mangini needed answered.
McCoy was the pick over veteran Jake Delhomme, who opened the season as the starter, missed most of two months with an ankle injury and had started the last three games. Mangini gave Delhomme the news.
“He handled it exactly like I thought Jake Delhomme would handle it,” Mangini said. “He couldn’t have been more professional, more supportive. Not only of Colt, but of the whole team. That’s just who he is.”
Mangini said he’s yet to decide who will be the No. 2 quarterback. Seneca Wallace is involved in the Wildcat package and could get the nod over Delhomme.
** Mangini confirmed linebacker David Bowens suffered a concussion Sunday in a loss to Buffalo. He didn’t practice again Thursday, but Mangini said there’s a chance he could play Sunday.
** Tight end Evan Moore (hip) missed practice, but hasn’t been ruled out.
** Linebacker Marcus Benard (shoulder) and fullback Lawrence Vickers (shoulder, hamstring) returned to practice after missing Wednesday.
