State election officials toss campaign charge against Fox News

COLUMBUS — Ohio elections regulators have thrown out a complaint alleging Fox News Network illegally helped Republican Gov.-elect John Kasich raise campaign money.

The Democratic Governors Association had charged that Fox let Kasich ask for donations during an August broadcast of “The O’Reilly Factor” and promoted the address of his campaign website. The group said the free publicity amounted to an improper in-kind campaign contribution from Fox.

The Ohio Elections Commission voted 5-0 on Thursday to dismiss the complaint.

The Columbus Dispatch reports an attorney for Fox told the commission the network had a right to interview Kasich and said running the web address was a standard way to identify candidates.

The Democratic Governors Association did not appear at the hearing.
