Clerk of Courts Kathy Fortney retires at the end of the week with two years left on her fifth term.
Her chief deputy Julie Kauffman will be sworn in as interim clerk, but it will be up to Medina County Republicans to find an official replacement for Fortney, a Republican.
Bill Heck, chairman of the Medina County Republican Party, said the party’s Central Committee is set to meet Jan. 8 to review the list of people who have expressed an interest in the position and to pick a replacement.
Fortney has said now may be the best time financially to start her retirement since there have been talks of potentially altering pension benefits in the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System.
She said she doesn’t know what she’s going to do with her retirement.
“I’m still young enough to proceed on a new career,” said Fortney, 63. “I’m not done.”
