CHIPPEWA LAKE — A gorilla, a county commissioner and a Lady Gaga look-alike all made a splash in the village’s namesake lake on Saturday.
It wasn’t a scene from one of Lady Gaga’s surreal music videos. It was an inaugural charity event sponsored by the Chippewa Lake Lions Club that had local participants — some in wild costumes — jump into Chippewa Lake in the dead of winter.
The gorilla and Lady Gaga were, of course, actually local residents dressed to get extra points from judges rating the jumps into the lake. However, County Commissioner Adam Friedrick actually did make the plunge.
“It’s cold,” Friedrick said just after climbing out of the lake. Those were the only two words most participants fresh out of the water could muster.
“You’re in and out so fast. It was invigorating,” said Vanna Robbins about half an hour after she made her jump.
Robbins’ husband, Alan Robbins, helped organize the event for the Chippewa Lake Lions Club. He said 61 people jumped in and raised about $7,000, which will be split between the Lions Club, the Feeding Medina County Initiative and the Seville Food Pantry.
“I think we got a good base for next year,” Robbins said.
