U.S. House Speaker Boehner to give OSU commencement

COLUMBUS — Ohio congressman and U.S. House Speaker John Boehner has agreed to speak to Ohio State University graduates and their families at this year’s spring commencement.

University President E. Gordon Gee said in a statement Wednesday that Boehner will bring “invaluable wisdom and insight” to the Class of 2011.

The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday June 12 at Ohio Stadium. About 8,500 graduates will receive their degrees.

Boehner is currently embroiled in a budget battle in Washington that threatens to shut down the government.

Ohio State noted that the U.S. House’s 53rd speaker is the first to come from Ohio since 1931. He has represented his southwest Ohio district in Congress since 1991.
