College notes: Tanya Davis doubling her fun for Yellow Jackets

As a prep, Tanya Davis finished among the top hitters in Highland history. Nothing has changed.

The Baldwin-Wallace senior recently added to her school mark for doubles in a career in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep of Kenyon.

The Hinckley Township resident slapped her 46th double of her college career, sixth of the season, to help the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-5.

Along with the record for doubles, she also has season records in runs scored (42), doubles (17) and hits (56), all tallied in her freshman year. Davis, a catcher and outfielder for B-W, is no stranger to the two-bagger, having hit 33 in a two-year span (2008-09).

This season, Davis is batting .417 with 25 hits, 19 RBI and 18 runs scored for the Yellow Jackets, who will be back in action today for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mount Union.

Baseball

Left-hander Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) struck out three and allowed just one walk over six innings for B-W, but it wasn’t enough as nationally ranked Marietta defeated the Yellow Jackets 5-1. Earlier last week, sophomore Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) picked up his second save of the season in a 7-6 triumph over Otterbein.

• Kent State senior Ben Klafczynski (Highland) had a single and run scored as the Golden Flashes took two from Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference play. Kent State has won nine in a row.

• Thanks to some aggressive base-running from Zach Colatruglio (Brunswick) in the fifth, nationally ranked Heidelberg took the first of two games with John Carroll in OAC action. After reaching base on a single, Colatruglio forced a throw in taking second base to allow a key to run to score in the frame.

• Findlay’s Dylan Cintula (Highland) drove in a pair of runs as a comeback attempt came up just short in a 5-4 loss to Hillsdale College. Teammate Jason Reitenbach (Brunswick) hit a home run in the opener of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double dip. The local tandem each had a pair of hits in two losses to Tiffin earlier last week.

• After entering the game with the bases loaded, Lake Erie freshman hurler Brad Raley (Highland) threw 32/3 scoreless innings to help the Storm beat 14-7.

• Junior Travis Danner (Medina) improved his pitching mark to 4-2 on the season for Walsh in an 11-4 win over Point Park in an American Mideast Conference tilt.

Softball

Ashland junior Emlyn Knerem (Brunswick) tossed her fifth no-hitter of the season, striking out seven as the Eagles crushed Ohio Dominican 14-0 in a five-inning, mercy-rule shortened game. The right-hander fanned eight in a 4-1 victory over ODU. Coming into the week, the former Gazette MVP was third in the country in strikeouts per inning (11.6), sixth in ERA (1.04) and seventh in strikeouts per seven innings (9.6).

• Heather Bauer (Highland) went 51/3 innings for Akron, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four as the Zips dropped the nightcap of a doubleheader with Ohio.
