CLEVELAND – Browns coach Pat Shurmur called rookie running back Armond Smith a “fast sucker” this week after practice.
Smith showed just how fast when he took Cleveland’s opening play of the third quarter 81 yards for a touchdown. Smith, from Union College, got a good seal block from Branndon Braxton off left tackle, hit the seam and ran away from the Lions.
Detroit matched the score after Smith fumbled deep in Cleveland territory, and the Browns led 28-20 entering the fourth quarter.
The Lions scored on a short touchdown pass from Drew Stanton to receiver Maurice Stovall.
