College signing: Outfielder Chad Sedio to play for Miami of Ohio

GRANGER TWP. — Anyone with a pair of eyes knows Chad Sedio is a Division I talent, and the senior made that assumption reality Tuesday morning.

Highland’s stud center fielder couldn’t get away from thinking about Miami of Ohio, so he made a verbal commitment to the Mid-American Conference school.

“I really liked the campus and I felt like it was the right fit for me,” the 6-foot-3, 175-pounder said. “The baseball facilities to the coach (Dan Simonds), I liked everything about it.”

While the MAC isn’t considered among Division I college baseball’s toughest leagues, it has drastically improved in recent years.

Miami, which finished 35-25 overall and 19-9 in the MAC last season, is a big reason why. Just two years ago, the Redhawks featured second baseman Kolbrin Vitek, a first-round draft pick of the Red Sox who is currently at Single-A.

Sedio, who is likely to receive a half-tuition athletic scholarship, selected Miami over Wright State, Dayton and Eastern Michigan.

“That definitely went into it,” Sedio said of playing in the MAC. “Against who I would be playing and how good the conference was, all that.”

Straightforward Highland coach Jeff Rollyson is confident Sedio can be the dynamic outfielder Miami is looking for. Since taking over center field full time, Sedio is an area-best 72-for-153 (.471) with 12 home runs, 55 RBI and 69 runs scored.

“If he keeps progressing at the rate he has over the four years I’ve had him, he’s definitely a guy who can play at the next level,” Rollyson said. “I told (Simonds), ‘It would be a mistake if you don’t get this kid.’

“Miami’s ecstatic. They’re getting a quality young man with a boatload of talent and a tremendous work ethic. I think it’s a good fit for him. I’m real happy for him.”
