Regional volleyball: Blue Streaks are up next for Bees

NORWALK — State-ranked Magnificat is next up for Medina’s volleyball team.

The Blue Streaks (20-5) captured their 22nd consecutive district title, earning the right to play the Bees (16-8) in the Norwalk Division I Regional semifinals Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Magnificat, which was ranked fifth in the season-ending OHSVCA poll, knocked off North Royalton in the Strongsville District final 25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16.

The top-seeded Blue Streaks opened the postseason by sweeping Midpark, then easily disposed of Strongsville in three games.

“Whether it was North Royalton or Magnificat, my girls will be ready to play,” said Medina coach Jason Schellenberger, whose squad beat Wadsworth in five games to win the Barberton District crown.

“We’re looking forward to the opportunity to represent our school at regionals.”

The Bees are making their second trip to regionals, having reached the round in Class AAA in 1984. They also are the 15th Medina County team to reach the Sweet 16.

The top half of the Norwalk Regional bracket features two teams with legitimate state title aspirations.

No. 1 ranked and undefeated Toledo St. Ursula

(25-0) will play No. 11 Avon Lake (23-2) in the first match Wednesday, which begins at 6 p.m.

The Arrows won the Perrysburg District, while the Shoregals claimed top honors at the Grafton Midview District.

The winners of the regional semifinals will meet Saturday at 2 p.m., with the survivor advancing to the state tournament at Wright State University on Nov. 11.
