Copley man dead after crash into moving train

SHARON TWP. — A Copley man died Sunday morning after his truck crashed into a moving train.

Wesley E. Danko, 19, was southbound on Medina Line Road at 1:35 a.m. when he struck the middle of a westbound Wheeling & Lake Erie train at a train crossing south of state Route 162, according to the Canton post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Danko’s 2005 Chevrolet Silverado went off the right side of the road and into a shallow creek before catching fire. Sharon Township EMS responded to the crash and transported Danko to Medina General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The railroad crossing was marked with flashing lights, and the train engineer was told by the train dispatcher to stop the train because a vehicle may have struck it, according to the patrol. One rail car, No. 80 of 159, suffered minor damage.

The crash is under investigation.
