Annual Turkey Bowl raises funds for St. Vincent De Paul Society
MEDINA TWP. — An annual pickup football game aims to raise more than $90,000 by Thanksgiving Day for local residents in need of a helping hand.
The 22nd annual Meadows Turkey Bowl kicks off about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 24 at the home of Mike Meadows, 3075 Hood Road.

As they did on Thanksgiving Day last year, more than 40 men will play football Nov. 24 to raise money for the St. Vincent De Paul Society to help needy people in Medina County. The football competition includes four teams of 10 to 12 players who each raise money from sponsors to go to the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
The match-up dates back to 1989 and proceeds benefit the society, Meadows said.
Last year, the Turkey Bowl brought in about $90,000 for the society, which helped to feed, clothe and offer funds for home heating to many needy folks in Medina County.
“The goal is $90,001,” Meadows said. “It’s not really about the money, but the mouths we feed and people we help.”
Part of the money raised from this year’s Turkey Bowl via the St. Vincent De Paul Society will benefit the family of area resident Jeff Thomas, who was in a serious car accident last summer, Meadows said.
The eight captains for the 2011 Turkey Bowl are Al Melchiorre and Bill Meadows, Tom Judson and John Cassidy, Tim and Terry Blascak, and Erin Cureton and Mike Biskup.
Melchiorre and player Bill Biegel are in the running for this year’s Big Hitter Award, which goes to the player who raises the most money for charity, Meadows said.
Corporate sponsors for the 2011 Turkey Bowl include Hyde Park Steakhouse, the Cleveland Indians and Weymouth Golf Club.
The Highland High School Marching Band is scheduled to play music before the competition and during game breaks, Meadows said. Connie Meadows will supply breakfast before kickoff.
